Sanibel recently became part of a special movement to promote reading amongst young and old alike. The Little Free Library is a non-profit organization of small “bookhouses” in community locations open 24/7. People can take a book for any length of time (or keep them) as well as donate books they think others would like. A truly free exchange. And it’s one of literally (no pun intended) 100 thousand locations throughout the country and Europe.
On Sanibel, the Little Free Library is located on the West end of the island (Santiva’s Lil Library ) at 6440 Pine Avenue (past The Lazy Flamingo and Coconut Drive), well constructed to handle Florida’s weather.
It’s easy and fun, and it’s even possible to start your own Little Free Library in your area. For more information about how to build and charter your own “bookhouse,” please go to littlefreelibrary.org.
