Like the Taste of the Islands, Sanibel and Captiva’s Luminary Festival has been reimagined for 2020.
As many recall, the islands celebrate the first weekend of December (Sanibel on Friday night, Captiva on Saturday night) with the official holiday lighting of Periwinkle Way (including luminary bags along the bike trails on and adjoining with Periwinkle Way). Many of Periwinkle’s stores have late-night sales and socials with an abundancy of refreshments and entertainment. Obviously with the pandemic, this is not possible for the crowds that would be involved.
Instead, local businesses and organizations have banded together to offer various specials for a full week (from Friday, December 4th to Friday, December 11th) so that everyone can enjoy the island spirit of the holidays from a COASTAL Distance!
For a list of all participants and specials, please follow this link to the Chamber of Commerce’s web page, which will have links to each business’ website for specific information. There’s too many to list in this blog, but there are a few places worth mentioning:
Bailey’s General Store – Operating for over a hundred years from one of Sanibel’s historic families. We think one of their limited-edition ornaments for your Christmas tree, whether you live in Florida or Alaska.
Chico’s – A Sanibel original in chic ladies’ fashions. Visit their very first store in Periwinkle Place.
Congress Jewelers – With their famous sealife-framed custom jewelry and collection of ancient coin-framed pieces.
Jerry’s of Sanibel – Home of their famous Key Lime Pies (special on these during Luminary Week).
Key West Express – We don’t usually endorse other Florida locations, but Key West is one of those other places Florida lovers want to visit. The beauty of it is that you can plan a day trip on a hydrofoil fast cruise from Fort Myers Beach to Key West (half the time it would take driving), enjoy all of its attractions (we hear there’s a bar or two there), and be back the same evening. Special savings for round-trip deals during Luminary Week.
Sanibel Chocolate Shop – One of the islands’ sweetest places!
Sanibel Historic Museum and Village – Enjoy a look at historic buildings of Olde Florida and the families that made Sanibel what it is today.
The Savoury Spoon – One of Sanibel’s newest and unique restaurants.
Suncatcher’s Dream – Filled with many gifts, including jewelry made from sand from Sanibel’s beaches.
We hope you get to enjoy some Holiday cheer on the Islands this Luminary Week because let’s face it…snow is overrated! Book Direct and Save!
