You are here

We just wanted to make a brief note about a couple of attractions that have reopened in the wake of the COVID-19 shutdown during the spring.

Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum

As you may have read in our earlier blog, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum was finishing up their renovations and preparing their new aquarium when they closed again along with much of the island’s businesses.  In recent weeks, as tourism was slowly restored, the Museum was able to finish their “Living Collection Gallery” (aquarium) and re-open to the public, which includes touch pools and scavenger hunts for the kids and the opportunity to watch a Giant Pacific Octopus.  They are also offering the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance so that you can plan on visiting at your convenience, comfort, and safety.  You can purchase tickets here.

CROW Visitor Education Center

The CROW Visitor Education Center, where kids of all ages can learn about local wildlife and CROW’s efforts to protect and heal injured wildlife. In some cases, CROW will care for these animals if they cannot be returned to the wild and these animals then become Animal Ambassadors.

J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge's Visitor & Education Center remains closed.  However, the Wildlife Drive is still open to the public 6 days a week (closed Fridays), as are all adjacent trails and facilities.  Admission fees have been suspended during this time to protect employees from exposure at the entrance gate.

Beaches Are Open

The beaches of Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are open!

As always, social distancing is highly encouraged in all places. Indoor locations which include but aren't limited to restaurants and shops are open at 50% capacity.  Please note, the City of Sanibel currently has mandated that masks or face coverings *must* be worn in all public indoor locations, especially if social distancing is not possible.

For more information on what’s open on Sanibel, you can either go to our COVID-19 Info section or go to the City of Sanibel’s website, which has been providing a “quick sheet” of the island’s re-opening status.
