The Great American Pastime is yet another great winter attraction in Florida.  After the thrill of the Super Bowl and this weekend’s Daytona 500, sports fans look forward to attending Spring Training Baseball (also known as the Grapefruit League).  Lee County is especially lucky as we have not one but TWO teams that play.

The Minnesota Twins have been training at Hammond Stadium (part of the CenturyLink Sports Complex) since 1991, which is special since they won the World Series that same year.  It’s also home to a minor league (Florida State League) team originally known as the Fort Myers Miracle.  Last year, the new owners of the team changed the name to the Fort Myers Mighty Muscles.

After years of playing at City of Palms Park, the Boston Red Sox moved into their brand new home at JetBlue Park at Fenway South in 2012.  This is practically a replica of their home at Fenway Park, which features their own versions of the Green Monster scoreboard, Pesky’s Pole (right foul pole), the Triangle (section in Center Field seating), and the Lone Red Seat (signifying the longest home run ever hit in Fenway North, scored by Ted Williams).  In fact, the diamond was designed to be geometrically identical to how Boston’s diamond sits so that players can accustom themselves to the correct position of the sun (give or take a half hour) during the regular season.

As of this writing, the equipment has arrived, and pitchers and catchers have begun their workouts.  Other players report this weekend (February 16), and games begin the following weekend.

Seating is at a premium at both fields and sales begin in early December for Spring Training tickets.  Many games sell out quickly (especially the Sox), but if you can get them, it’s well worth the experience.

We would also advise anyone who plans to go to allow for extra travel time.  Both parks are located off Daniels Road in South Fort Myers, and traffic has been known to be extremely heavy on game days.  For more information on tickets and schedules, please visit the webpages for the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins.
