The year may be winding down, but there’s still plenty to celebrate, even in the year 2020 has become.  Among the best news to share is that the Sanibel Farmer’s Market will be open for its 2020/2021 season starting this coming Sunday, October 4!

Located near City Hall on Dunlop Road (with additional parking by the BIG ARTS Strauss Theater nearby), the Farmer’s Market has vendors offering the widest range of foods, snacks, treats, and gifts every Sunday from 8am to 1pm. We often tell guests, “Go hungry. Don’t even have your coffee yet.” That’s because one of the vendors is Jimmy’s Java, with excellent fresh roasted coffee and espresso flavors, both hot and cold brew to drink here and packaged to bring home.

The Farmer’s Market was one of the few staples that managed to stay open during the lockdown on arrivals last spring from the COVID-19 “safer-at-home” order, though they took many precautions (masks, not allowing loitering for eating or drinking, etc.) to protect customers.  This year, with Florida entering “Phase 3” of reopening the state’s economy, it should be even better.  They do ask, in keeping with the City’s current mandate, that you wear masks and practice social distancing whenever possible.  Also, please touch only that which you intend to buy.

Sanibel Island Event Updates

39th Annual Taste of the Islands

In other event news, the 39th Annual Taste of the Islands is scheduled for November to benefit the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).  Ordinarily a one-day event in one location, the pandemic forced the organization to realize the Taste needed to be “REIMAGINED.”  This year, the FULL MONTH OF NOVEMBER will be used to encourage a “CROW Crawl” with different participating restaurants to visit each Sunday.  CROW will also have a tent of its own outside one of the restaurants with their Animal Ambassadors.  Those who aren’t able to participate in the Crawl can purchase “Taste Passports” (either on locations or online) with a map and list of participating restaurants to “punch” and vote on favorites.  For more information, please click this link.

Holiday Luminary Festival

Finally, the annual Holiday Luminary Festival has been similarly altered.  Normally held on the first Friday in December (1st Saturday for Captiva), this 7-hour street festival has become a 7-DAY long “Coastal Distance Edition” from December 4th to 11th promoting shopping at small businesses.  Discounts and other offers will be made available from participating businesses.  We hope to have more information on this soon.
