Back in May, we wrote about what the purpose was in planning vacations during a pandemic. At that time, weekly condo rentals had just been restored by Governor Ron DeSantis and the Sanibel City Council. Restaurants were allowed to open for in-house dining again, but only at 25% capacity at first. Also, Florida was restricting residents from certain “hot spot” states (including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) from visiting short-term (requiring a 14-day quarantine).
Many things have changed in the past five months:
- There are no longer any U.S. states that Florida is effectively banning from visiting. Options are available for Canadian travelers (though many have opted not to do so in case borders close unexpectedly).
- Restaurants/bars, shops, and museums are open at 100% indoor and outdoor capacity (though there is a mask mandate for indoor public places).
- Public beach parking is open again (with social distancing encouraged). Beaches were always open from private accesses, but public entry points were closed to prevent day travelers from crowding the beaches.
- Some of Sanibel’s annual events, such as the Taste of the Islands, are still on (with some changes). Stay tuned for information on the Holiday Luminary celebration!
In the months since the islands re-opened, Sanibel Holiday alone has booked over 900!! reservations, many of which were last-minute (some literally!). We learned a new term that fits this trend; “pent-up travel,” which describes the desire to get out of the house and enjoy our unique outdoor locations. We had so many people tell how much they enjoyed the chance to come and the wonderful time they had on Sanibel and Captiva! Even when we had heavy rain in September, they loved the tons of shells that washed up afterwards. They also appreciated our continuing efforts to keep condos and homes clean and disinfected to make them SanCap Safe! Some of the reviews we’ve received are:
“A great escape from the COVID-19 pandemic”
“The BEST kind of Social Distancing”
“Had a wonderful time even in the midst of the pandemic. Everyone was respectful of masks, distance etc.. the owner was friendly and accommodating as was Sanibel Holiday.”
