Trying to book a vacation can be overwhelming. With so many great choices and destinations, it is hard to decide where and how to plan. Let me make this easy for you.
Destination? Well, that’s the easy part…SANIBEL ISLAND ALL THE WAY!!!
Pristine beaches, nature galore, “Old Florida” feel, Mom and Pop style shops, no big-name chain stores, great restaurants, 26 miles of bike paths to explore from the east end Lighthouse to the west end Blind Pass, water activities, relaxing on the Gulf beaches, best sunsets in all of Florida…The list goes on and on!
The minute you arrive to the Sanibel Causeway and follow the “Happy Lane” (if you know…you know, and if you don’t then you will) you are transported to paradise. The stunning & serene causeway beaches are just a sneak peek as to what you will find once you arrive on the island.
Let me walk you through a taste of what you will experience here on Sanibel:
Once on the island, take a left and follow Periwinkle Way to the end where you will find the famous “Sanibel Lighthouse” located at the Lighthouse Beach. Parking is literally on the beach. Park and walk just a few steps and you will then feel the warmth of the soft white sand between your toes and instantly you look around and say to yourself, “WOW this is incredible!” As you walk along the water’s edge, you will feel the tranquility when the stress of everyday life starts to leave your mind and body.
If shelling is your passion, then you are choosing the right destination. Sanibel Island is known as the “Seashell Capital of the World”! Even on a day that Mother Nature may not be cooperating, you are sure to find some small treasures. But…catch Mother Nature on a good day and you will be in seashell heaven!
If you want to save the Lighthouse for another day, then take a right onto Periwinkle Way when you arrive, and you will be transported back to that “Old Florida”. You will drive down the main area of Sanibel and see lots of restaurants, unique, fun shops, and local businesses. All along Periwinkle Way you will see a part of the 26-mile bike path. Park your car at your vacation rental and spend your time biking around the island. There are several locally owned bike rental companies with many styles to suit everyone’s abilities and needs. They will even deliver to your vacation rental.
Of course, one of the main reasons you are choosing Sanibel is because of the Gulf beaches…calm waves, turquoise waters, soft sand. Sanibel has 7 public beaches with full facilities & parking if you want to explore beyond your beach just outside your vacation rental.
• Lighthouse Beach Park (East end): Features a historic lighthouse, fishing pier (coming soon), and nature trails.
• Gulfside City Beach Park (Algiers Beach): Known for being more secluded, located on Algiers Lane.
• Tarpon Bay Road Beach Park: Popular for swimming and easy access, located at the end of Tarpon Bay Road.
• Bowman’s Beach Park: Known as a popular spot with amenities including a playground, restrooms, and extensive parking.
• Blind Pass Beach Park: Located on the border of Sanibel and Captiva, great for fishing and shells.
• Turner Beach Park (Captiva side of Blind Pass): Known for sunsets and fishing, though swimming can be dangerous due to currents.
• Sanibel Causeway Beach Parks: Beaches lining the causeway islands, ideal for windsurfing and picnics, managed by Lee County.
Explore them all!
Make sure to save some time to visit the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge (closed on Friday’s). A world renowned 6400+ acre protected mangrove ecosystem. The refuge is known for its over 250 different bird species, including Roseate Spoonbills, Ospreys, and Reddish Egrets, along with manatees, and alligators. Drive or bike through the 4-mile “Wildlife Drive” or take the scheduled tour tram. Stop at the “Observation Tower” and enjoy! The views and sunsets from the tower are incredible. Evening is the time of day when you will see flocks of birds heading in for the night to roost. What an awe-inspiring moment!
If you enjoy hiking, there are a few hiking trails as well.
Here are the trails that are currently open in 2026:
• Bailey Tract Trails (Open): The Bailey Tract, located on Tarpon Bay Road, remains open for hiking and biking. While the main parking lot at Bailey Tract was temporarily closed in early 2026 for construction, access is available through the Smith Pond parking area on Island Inn Road.
• Wildlife Drive (Open, with restrictions): The 4-mile Wildlife Drive is open to pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, allowing access to several trails, though it is closed on Fridays.
• Wulfert Keys Trail (Open): This 0.24-mile trail off Wildlife Drive is open for wildlife viewing, offering scenic views of Pine Island Sound.
• Cross-Dike Trail (Open): This trail remains open as a 0.16-mile, one-way pedestrian and cyclist connector between Wildlife Drive and the Indigo Trail.
• Indigo Trail (Partially Open): Sections of the 4-mile Indigo Trail are open for hiking and biking, though segments near the Visitor & Education Center have experienced closures.
On your way to Ding Darling, you will pass by The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium. You will learn about all the different shells on the island and the sea creatures that inhabit them. You will also be passing CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife). Explore the Visitors Educational Center or attend one of the many presentations. Book a Hospital Tour, meet the staff and see the inner workings of the hospital and see first-hand how patients are cared for.
For those of you who enjoy shopping, Sanibel will not disappoint. Stop at Periwinkle Place Shops, Tahitian Gardens, The Village Shops, The Shops at Jerrys, The Seahorse Plaza and so many others. If you are lucky enough to be here between October and May, you can visit the awesome “Farmers Market” (Sundays 9-1).
Vacation and eating go hand in hand. From delis to pizza and ice cream to casual or fine dining, you will not be lacking in choices. With over 50 restaurants, the choices are almost endless. Here is the most current list of restaurants:
The best thing about the paradise of Sanibel Island is that you can be as active or as lazy as you want. Sit on your lanai and read a book, take in some sun rays from any of the fantastic beaches or lounge at the pool. Definitely go shelling and look for the world famous Junonia and become part of the “Junonia Club”. Maybe bike ride, play tennis or pickleball, fish, kayak, paddleboard, book a dolphin tour, catch a sunrise and definitely a sunset! Look for an alligator, go birding, get ice cream, and play a round of golf. Am I missing anything? Maybe, but that will be up to you to explore and find out.
If you have been considering a Sanibel trip… now is the perfect time to start planning. If you have been contemplating on returning or questioning if the island is ready for visitors…. The answer is 100% YES!!!
